[ARCHIVED] Into Orbit! Coaches and Mentors needed for First Lego League teams

First Lego League Logo

The Billerica Recreation Department has sponsored two First Lego League for over 5 years but needs a couple of additional coaches/mentors to work with the kids. If you know of an adult who might be interested in being part of the Coaching/Mentoring Team for this fun program, please feel free share this information with them.

If you know of kids ages 9-14 (regardless of residency) who might be interested and motivated to participate in the challenge, please feel free to share this with their families as well! (FLL Registration Form)

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE COACHES AND MENTORS WANTED!

The Billerica Recreation is currently recruiting additional adult volunteer coaches/mentors and for its First Lego League teams that will be meeting and competing Fall 2018. Meetings are held weekly until closer to competition event (usually early December). Past meetings were held on Friday evenings but this is dependent on Coach/Mentor availability. The challenge this year is titled: INTO ORBIT – exploring the physical and social problems space explorers face if they are away from Earth for years at a time.

At this time, the first meeting has been scheduled for September 7.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) introduces students age 9-14 to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a themed playing surface and working on team research projects focused on the same theme. FLL teams are guided by their imaginations and their adult coaches. During the season, the teams meet regularly to:

  • Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts to solving various missions
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills

In addition, those teams who decide to compete in the regional competition will participate in at least one tournament in the greater Boston area.

This program is open to all regardless of residency and we have welcomed future “engineers” from all over the Rte 3 corridor! Some of our first year FLL participants are now at college majoring in Engineering and other STEM majors!
