The Town of Billerica is planning roadway and traffic improvements along Boston Road (Route 3A) as part of the Boston Road Revitalization Project, with limits extending from Cummings Street to Tower Farm Road. In the fall of 2014, the Town was awarded a grant in the amount of $2,290,000 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development under the MassWorks Infrastructure Program.
The project includes the repaving of Boston Road (Route 3A), new concrete sidewalks on both sides of the street, a new traffic signal at the intersection with Charnstaffe Lane and the Shops at Billerica, and signal improvements at the intersection with Tower Farm Road. In addition, overhead utility wires will be placed underground in the section of Boston Road (Route 3A) between Cummings Street and Charnstaffe Lane. The lane configuration on Boston Road (Route 3A) will remain essentially as it is today with 2 lanes northbound, 1 lane southbound, with additional turn lanes as needed at the traffic signals. There are various streetscape elements included in the project, ranging from ornamental lighting, street trees, and decorative sidewalk treatment. Please click here to view detailed plans. A copy is also available for viewing in the office of the Engineering Division at Town Hall.
The completion date for the project is September 8, 2017. We are planning for the various utilities to begin individual work associated with the undergrounding of overhead wires sometime in the Spring of 2017. Building connection transitions from overhead to underground will be bid under a separate contract.
